A fairly common problem when it comes to League of Legends (LoL) is that users’ computers freeze when a game ends. This is of course very unfortunate, no one wants to restart their computer every time they have played a game.
That’s the reason why I’ve listed the 9 most reasons for this problem, complete with solutions. Hopefully, after reading this article, you can resume playing and using your computer in a normal fashion – without having it freezing on you.
1. Turn Off Debug Logging
Debug logging is a feature many software programs use. It sends information to developers on things like crashes and other bugs so that it’s easy to gather data and fix problems. However, this feature can cause your computer to freeze after a game of League.
Therefore, you should try to turn this setting off. To do this, follow the simple steps below.
- In Discord, click the cogwheel in the bottom left
- From the menu, choose “Voice & Video”
- Find “Debug Logging”
- Disable it!
Why this setting causes Discord and/or your computer to lag when playing League isn’t known, but the setting serves little to no function for you as a private user anyways, so it doesn’t matter if you turn it off.
2. Disable The Overlay In GeForce Experience
Game overlays can be detrimental to the performance of your computer, and can furthermore cause other problems such as temporary freezes. That’s why you should turn off the in-game overlay in GeForce Experience, which is a console for Nvidia GPU users.
Even if you aren’t actively using it, make sure you disable it in your GeForce Experience menu to be sure. To do this, follow the steps below.
- Go into the GeForce Experience app
- Click the “Settings” icon
- Uncheck the “In-game overlay” option if it’s turned on
While on this topic, I would also recommend turning off other in-game overlays such as Discord, Twitch, AMD, and so forth. I generally don’t find them very useful anyways, so it shouldn’t be a big loss to your gaming experience.
3. Change League Of Legends Settings
A freeze like what you’re experiencing is oftentimes the result of a small bug and nothing major. One solution to this problem that players have found is changing a setting in the League of Legends client. The setting makes the League of Legends client active at all times while you’re playing.
To try this solution, follow the steps below.
- Go into your settings menu by clicking the cogwheel at the top-right
- Click “General”
- Under “Close client under game”, choose “Never”
This has been proven a solution for many players. If it didn’t help you, make sure to keep reading to find out other solutions to your issue.
4. Update GPU Drivers
You can try to update your graphics drivers to see if that fixes your issue. Having outdated graphics drivers can cause all sorts of problems.
To do this, simply head to your manufacturer’s website and download new drivers. Most people have Nvidia graphics cards, and their drivers are available here.
Make sure you select your exact graphics card when downloading drivers. If you’re unsure of what exact GPU you have, simply go to device manager in Windows, click on “Display adapters” and check.
5. Check For Corrupted Files
A possible solution for this problem is to check if any broken or corrupted system files make your computer freeze after a League of Legends game. This is fortunately enough very easy to check. Follow the steps below to do so.
- Open your command interpreter by typing “cmd” into your Windows search bar and clicking the black icon
- Copy and paste the following lines of text, and make sure to press “Enter” between everyone of them
- “sfc /scannow”
- “dism /online /cleanup-image /CheckHealth”
- “dism /online /cleanup-image /Restorehealth”
- After the tests are done, restart your computer
6. Reinstall League of Legends
To exhaust the possibility of broken files being the problem, try reinstalling League of Legends. If you have it installed on a slower HDD drive, try installing it on an SSD instead if you have one.
It is a solution that can fix a lot of issues that otherwise would have remained hidden due to the reinstall completely wiping League from your computer.
All of your keybindings and other similar settings are saved to your account rather than your computer, and therefore you won’t have to configure your settings once you reinstall it, which is nice.
7. Allow League of Legends In Your Firewall / Antivirus Settings
There’s a good chance that your firewall or antivirus protection is in conflict with your League of Legends client. Make sure you have the League of Legends .exe file allowed in both your firewall and antivirus settings.
To quickly check this, try turning off your firewall and/or antivirus and play a game of League. If your computer no longer freezes after exiting the game, then you have found your issue.
To allow League of Legends in the firewall settings, follow the steps below.
- Type “Windows Security” in the Windows search bar and click on the shield icon
- On the left side, click on “Firewall and network protection”
- Click on “Allow an app through the firewall”
- Scroll until you find the League of Legends .exe file and check it
8. Clean Temp File Folder
Your system is constantly storing temporary files, and there isn’t infinite space for these files to be stored. Therefore, make sure to check that the folder for temporary files isn’t full. You can also safely and without risk clear this folder of files.
To clear your temp files, follow the steps below.
- Press the Windows Key + R
- Type “temp” in the search box and hit “Enter”
- Select all the files in the folder that shows up and delete them
As I mentioned before, temporary files are completely fine to clear out once in a while, you’re not at risk of losing anything.
9. Check For Memory Problems
Memory issues can cause your computer to freeze at certain times, and doing a memory check can be a good way to diagnose your RAM for issues.
There can exist multiple faults with a computer’s RAM, so there’s not really any universal solution. I strongly recommend running a test, however, and then going from there.
To run a memory scan, follow the steps below.
- Press the Windows Key + R
- Type “mdsched.exe” in the search box and hit “Enter”
- Choose your preferred time for the scan
The next time you start your computer it will perform a scan. If your computer finds any faults within your RAM memory, this is most likely the reason why your computer freezes after a League of Legends game.
What to do after this depends on what the issue is with your RAM. Replacing them can be a good idea as their comparatively cheap to other computer components.
